Goal – To make a valid declare as quickly as possible. The first player at a table to do this is the winner.

Valid Declare – One pure sequence and one pure or impure sequence.

Scores – Player score is calculated as soon as any of the players makes a valid declare. Scores are calculated for all losing players. Size of winning is based on the points accumulated by the defeated players.

Point Calculation – Points for all unmelded cards are calculated. If a player holds no pure sequence in their hand, all cards in hand will be taken for point calculation. If the losing player has 1pure and 1 impure sequence or set, only unmatched cards will be counted. A losing player can accumulate a maximum of 80 points per game.

Sequence – This is also called a run and it consists of 3 or more cards of same suit arranged consecutively. A pure sequence is also known as a straight run. Joker cards, printed or wildcards cannot be used to form a pure sequence.

Set – A set is made up of 3 or 4 cards of different colours (or suits) but of the same rank. E.g. 3 Aces or four 8’s. A joker card may be used to form a set.

Deal – Everyone on the table gets 13 cards which are visible to individual players only. Once 13 cards have been dealt, the very next card from the deck is opened. This is the top card in the discard pile. All other cards make the stack from which players can pick cards turn by turn as the game progresses.

Steps in the Game of Indian Rummy

  1. Players take their seats at a table after selecting the game type and table at which they wish to play.
  2. A dealer is selected based on the value of a single card dealt to each player at the table.
  3. 13 cards are dealt to each player.
  4. The first card of the discard pile is selected.
  5. A wildcard joker card is automatically selected.
  6. Each player should then arrange their cards to see which cards they are looking to pick and which ones they wish to discard to complete melding all cards in hand into valid sets and sequences.
  7. At their turn a player can pick the top card (open) in the discard pile or the top card (face down) from the stockpile and discard one of their cards in hand to the discard pile. This way the 13 cards in hand are always maintained.
  8. The picking and discarding of cards continues till one player melds all cards into valid sequences and sets and then makes a show.
