Online Rummy in Tamil Nadu

The Indian state of Tamil Nadu is one of the most influential states in terms of gaming and of course online Rummy. There exists a huge difference between many of the table card games found prevalent in casinos. These include Caribbean Stud Poker, Baccarat, Asia Poker, etc. Whereas all the formerly mentioned games are considered games of chance, Rummy is accepted as a game of skill. The lawmakers and the police in the state have placed blackjack and teen patti or flush on the same page of chance based game.

Tamil Nadu and Rummy
There were a lot of folks from the state who were following rummy throughout their life. The famous milestone in this rummy journey was crossed in the year 1967, famously known as the
“Case State of Andhra Pradesh v. K. Satyanarayana the Supreme Court of India set a precedent for rummy being treated as a game of skill.”[1]

This revolutionary judgment has sided the Rummy game and, the sections 49 of the Madras City Police Act as well as section 11 of the Tamil Nadu Gaming Act have made exclusions for skill based games. The majority of other Indian states follow the same exemptions too./p>

The Year 2011
It all went very well for the players, plus the game was at its peak and the participation was incredible too. However on August 10, 2011, police of the state raided the "Mahalakshmi Cultural Association" in T Nagar, where they and unearthed 56 persons playing rummy for stakes i.e. money. The police confiscated 178 chips and an amount of Rs. 6.95 lakh. As many as 56 people were put behind the bars with gambling associated crimes. A judgment came later, which clearly stated:
"Rummy was a game of skill and therefore police could not treat it as illegal activity."[2]

As the time rolled the suspicion on this wonderful card game start getting darker. On March 22, 2012, a shocking verdict was delivered against the judgment delivered by the apex court. The stated words broke the heart of millions of people, which said:
“Playing cards for stakes has two evils. It corrupts the mind of the players, making them addicts, and it makes most of the players bankrupt.” And, so they ruled, “if an establishment is used for this activity, it will be termed a gambling house. It is illegal if members or guests or the club makes a profit out of gambling."[3]

The verdict wasn’t a very likeable one, especially by the clubs that organize 13-card rummy tourneys and the people of the beautiful state of Tamil Nadu. They are the ones who had to pay the price. It further noted that the police were free to check on other clubs offering rummy for stakes if they so choose.

It is a sad fact that, even if the card game Rummy is a hardcore skill base game, the government is not providing enough grounds to make it a regulated body and eliminate the gray area.

The Rummy tournaments were used to be the place of social gathering, where people of the state would make the best use of their skill and also spend quality time with dear ones. We really wish to see a legal structure which eliminates all the confusion regarding Rummy.
