Rummy is a simple card game with a few rules that are easy to understand and grasp. That’s one of the reasons masses have been taking to the brain game like anything. What makes the uncomplicated game special? It is the need for smart application of mind. For that, it would be good if you know Rummy Strategies. Presenting Rummy Strategies for new players:

  • 1.

    Arranging Cards

As soon as you get your cards, which are 13 in number, arrange them properly according to colour or suit. It would enable you to get a gist of what all cards you possess in a cursory glance. Keep sorting and rearranging frequently as you form valid melds.

  • 2.

    Analyse Your Hand

Have a careful look at your cards to decide which combinations, i.e., runs and sets, would be convenient for you. Planning according to the available resources is the most basic rummy strategy.

  • 3.

    The Drop Option

Upon scrutinising your cards, if you feel that your hand is worthless, and melding it would be an uphill task, it is advisable to quit the game. It would restrict your loss to the minimum depending on when you drop. If you opt out in your very first turn, you will lose by a mere 20 points. Any subsequent drop, but before any other player declares, costs you 40 points.

  • 4.

    High Value Cards

Do you have any high-value cards such as Jacks, Queens, Kings, and Aces? If yes, check if they are in the form of a pure run. If the answer is ‘yes’, the major part of your task is done. Your big cards are an asset. However, if they are not in the form of a pure sequence, and you do not have any other pure run too, it would be better to discard the big cards at the earliest.

  • 5.

    A Pure Run

The first and foremost priority is to meld a pure sequence, for it is your lifeline in a game of rummy. If it is missing in your hand, and some player declares the game, you could end up losing by the maximum value of 80 points. No other combinations would work in the absence of a pure run.

  • 6.

    The Joker Card(s)

Don’t underestimate a Joker card in rummy. Once you have a pure run in place, Joker(s) can help you quickly create all other melds, whether runs or sets. Even a single unrelated card can be converted into an impure run or a set with the help of two Joker cards. Make the best use of Joker(s).

  • 7.

    The Middle Cards

Middle cards like 4, 5, 6, 7 are the best ones to have in rummy. Why? They have a wide scope, for you can use them with small as also big cards to form melds.

  • 8.

    A Flexible Approach

Don’t wait for a particular card for too long. Likewise, don’t hold onto a card for a long time. Keep strategizing, and accordingly change your plans, as the cards unfold during the game.

  • 9.

    An Eye on Rival Players

All said and done, the most critical rummy strategy is to keep a sharp eye on your opponent player(s), i.e., on the cards they pick and drop. It is something that you must never ignore. This is how you can get to know what melds they could be aiming at, and accordingly, you should plan your moves.
